Most Beautiful Cars of the 1960s: The Awesome 1968 Buick Wildcat (430 V8)!
I think the plastic fenders were Incorporated across all the a body lines not just the Oldsmobile. It was a weight conservation effort.
I have no hits on my comment. Not even 1. Discrimination sure sucks.
Pimp machine
in 1988 hardly anyone had a phone
The body looks similar to the last gen Trans Amm
Its hideous.
Yes, I do remember this when it came out- thought there was no way it would go into production at that time but still very cool. LED tail light / tail strip was very neat for the time. It has been in my recent memory too as I have a small model car of this which came with another model car I bought at an estate auction. Awesome to see this car is still around!
I see where they got the idea for the new Escalade, 2 screen instrument cluster 😂
I always think that this was the generation where they really were thinking Cord... The "squared pontoon" affect in the fenders and the mechanically challenging blank coffin nose in the first years. I like these later ones because the hot-wire bent-glass and the addition of open grills remove some of the visual heft. (Oh, and I also laughed the first time I saw eXcesS...) 😅
I'm 63 yr old and I'm not seeing outrageous but rembering how comfortable those cars were compared to today's hard euro style seats.
Stellantis posts record profit, revenue in 2023
Weeeeeeeeyrd
Interior is dissapointing as its possible to make truly retro styled interior like zmercedes done in mid 2010s with C class and GLC or later E class with round silver vents or hell stuff that Pagani and Spyker did in their cars. Instead they just do slightly more colourful but ugly interior from generic 1990s car.
Please stop trying to revise history by saying these cars were symbolic of the times. They were embarrassments. We got through the malaise buy buying and holding onto vehicles made before 1973.
An old advertising line, "Ford has a better idea", Definitely does Not apply here! I would never have tried to drive a car with that system. It is inherently wrong.
Please God Stop..... I'll do whatever you want just shut it off....Please shut it off. Oh, wait. I can shut it off myself. Thank goodness. I'm certain they didn't use waterboarding now. They used commercials like this...
01:30 Chrysler didn't "have to take government money" in the late 1970s... they *begged* the government for money to bail them out. therein setting in motion repeated taxpayer bailouts of everything from oil companies to investment banks... ronnie raygun called it trickle down economics, and the boardroom cowboys have been doing it ever since. company not profitable enough? threaten to go bankrupt... some politician will jump to your aid (usually, a party known as republican one)
There never dated 😢
'72-'78 GMC motorhome used the Toronado engine and chassis. All very cool engineering.
A definite safety feature, you could keep your eyes on the road not look for a pack on the passenger seat. Should be a legal requirement for all new cars ;)
Styling likes are so individual -- I find nothing jaw dropping about these boxy boring cadillacs -- the stacked headlights the dullest ones. Give me a 57 - 62. That goes for all American cars they stopped being fun about 1964.
It looks like a very large, black, upside down bathtub.
They could bring that out today and it’d sell. Beautiful design.
What were the Turns Lock to Lock?! It looks like it would be overly sensitive but you could use 1 hand!!
I thought that you were going to bring up Oldsmobile's clever engine "valve rotaters." Color me gobsmacked when you mentioned plastic fender liners. 😂 JJS
61 WAS HIDEOUS. 59 LOOKS BETTER IN PICTURES. 60 WAS QUITE NICE.
The local undertaker bought one of these. He specified that it come with the tissue paper dispenser which GM discontinued.
So was the thinking that this GTO would replace the two-door Grand Am when that model was upsized in 1992, a la Beretta/Corsica? Or was it thought to stand apart as something sportier-yet or just differently styled than the Grand Am GT? Or were they still considering holding the Grand Am to its smaller size in the next gen? Or was this just a styling diversion, or trial balloon to gauge the future utility of the GTO name?
A fancy Caprice and Roadmaster
DONT BE AN EMBARRASSING PUT- DOWNER: MYSELF AND MANY OTHER VIEWERS LOVE THIS CAR AND REALY WISH IT WAS O I RZ. 😊😊😊😊😊
9 minute video with 1 minute of interesting information.
They used a scanimate to make a cartoon? That's wild.
I always thought the '73 A-body cars, at least before the mid-1970s "update", were among the few cars that looked as good with their 5 MPH bumpers as they would have without. I just looked at a '73 Century photo and it has similar looking black fender liners, so I assume they had spread throughout the mid-sized lineup. GM full sized cars still had metal liners in '73 and they served as gusset plates for the 2 pairs of cross-braces that reinforced the nose. The Vega was notorious for lacking plastic liners in its early years and when they were added, they must have been hard to see from above, with the steel fenders, including the shock towers, being so central to the structure of the car. Most of the modern cars I've seen have plastic liners that are little more than membranes, probably because there is so much steel surrounding the front wheels in a modern unibody structure. But as long as the plastic liners have a path for water to drain out, they are probably prolonging the life of all that steel.
@9:20 The wheels weren't used on another Pontiac; the design was used (with some modification) on the 94-96 Chevy Beretta Z26. I guess the Beretta Z26 designers like the look of this concept and since this didn't go into production felt free to use it on the Beretta itself. As you said, the concept is based on the Beretta.
Thank you for another interesting, well-presented video. In the late 1980s I worked for a promotion company that did on-site displays for various GM makes. One day in the warehouse I spotted a Grand Am coupe that had been modified with a deep dual grille front end and the letters GTO in one of the openings. It had the twin-cam four-cylinder and a 5-speed and was fully operational (it could be driven from the trailer to the display setup.) I was told that it had been a prototype but was now likely headed to the crusher. This was before cellphone cameras so all I have is the memory of spotting that unknown GTO / Grand Am.
well true i would have bought a 58 chrysler.
i recall thinking it was ugly and the 58 chevy too. now looking at the 58 buick it looks pretty good. no 57 lincoln premier but given what is on the road now, dull squares, pretty good. i like the yellow one.
I’m seeing a few broken thumbs
Does your head get stuck between the headrest Gap if you get in an accident 🤔
I even see some Oldsmobile 88 in this
Worthy of production.......but not as a G.T.O.
Interesting. Never seen anything like it.
Nice car, what would you be asking for it?
It was 1971, so you don't have to think too hard about what they may have been on. I thought that the actual demonstrations were pretty good and the executives were very good at what they were explaining. All-in-all, it was not bad, other than the goofy, stoner cartoon at the beginning.
I saw this car at a auto show in 1976. Fell in love with this car. Such a classy, beautiful car
Seems like they got the idea watching people dancing the Twist.
For some reason early plastics and bakelite were commonly red. I couldn't tell you why though. Odd that the B bodies stayed with steel til the end as plastic would have made perfect sense.
I love old cars wish i still had my 93 S10 blazer
GM really was at its peak. Graceful styling, high quality interior trim and wonderful power trains. The big cam big or multi carb setups get all the press but a pre smog biggish premium fuel V8 with a turbo 400 transmission and 2.75ish rear end ratio was the perfect combination for effortless, brisk and quiet propulsion. Truly peak Detroit!
Anyone who's ever used R/C vehicles as a hobby to the point of proficiency would probably love the wrist-twist. Otherwise, it would be one helluva learning curve that leads to crashes.
